Die 9de Cannes-rolprentfees is van 23 April - 10 Mei 1956 in Cannes, Frankryk, gehou.[1] Die Palme d'Or is toegeken aan The Silent World deur Jacques-Yves Cousteau en Louis Malle.[2] Die fees is geopen met Marie-Antoinette reine de France (Marie Antoinette Queen of France) deur Jean Delannoy en afgesluit met Il tetto (The Roof) deur Vittorio de Sica.[3][4]
Die Franse akteur, regisseur en vervaardiger Maurice Lehmann was die president van die jurie.
Weens die Koue Oorlog-klimaat van dié tyd is geglo Amerikaners (wat die fees geldelik ondersteun het) het spesiale behandeling gekry en dit het die Oosblok gegrief. ’n Besluit is daarom geneem om prente onder sekere omstandighede te onttrek. Dit het kritiek ontlok, want dit is as sensuur beskou. In 1956 is besluit om enige sodanige sensuur te verbied en ’n nuwe era van die fees is begin.[5]
