Dit kan 'n sout wees wat die chloriedioon (Cl−) bevat, soos die bekende natriumchloried NaCl (tafelsout). Dit kan egter ook 'n organiese stof wees waarin waterstofatome deur chlooratome vervang is, soos in chloroform (CHCl3).
Chloriede van metale het meestal ioniese bindings. Hulle kan beskou word as soute afgelei van waterstofchloried. Die meeste soute is taamlik goed oplosbaar in water. Uitsonderings op hierdie reël is soute soos AgCl, PbCl2 and Hg2Cl2 wat effens kovalent is.
