Maarjamäe's known history dates back to 1689, with the area back then known as Ristimäe/Streitberg. The end of the 17th century saw the construction of a summer manor [et], with the area becoming a popular resort for the burghers. The construction of a sugar factory in 1811 saw the area become known as Suhkrumäe, with its current name only coming into existence in 1873.[2] Suburbia construction ensued in the 1940s and 1950s, transforming the area into its modern form.[3]
