Marshal Humberto de Alencar Castello Branco (Portuguese pronunciation: [ũˈbɛʁtu dʒi alẽˈkaʁ kasˈtɛlu ˈbɾɐ̃ku]) (September 20, 1897 – July 18, 1967) was a Brazilian military leader and statesman. He served as the first president of the Brazilian military dictatorship after the 1964 military coup d'etat. He was a member of a more liberal "legalist" faction within the regime,[1] as opposed to his more authoritarian successors.
In this Portuguese name, the first or maternal family name is Alencar and the second or paternal family name is Castelo Branco.
