The unit was established in 1982[2] due to the increased risk of terrorist activity against Norwegian interests, including the oil platforms in the North Sea.[3]
On 1 January 2014, the Norwegian Special Operations Command (NORSOCOM),[1] was established uniting the FSK and the Naval Special Operation Command (Norwegian: Marinejegerkommandoen) (MJK) under the command in the Norwegian Armed Forces.[4]
