The transit center opened in June 1992 as a major hub for North Seattle buses and was prioritized as a light rail terminus during planning later in the decade. Construction on the light rail extension to Northgate began in 2012 and station construction began in 2017. The extension of the 1 Line, including Northgate station and a pedestrian bridge over Interstate 5, opened on October 2, 2021. Northgate will remain the northern terminus of the 1 Line until the Lynnwood Link extension is opened in August 2024. It was once proposed as a bus rapid transit terminal and is an area with potential for additional transit-oriented development.
