Meerut (pronunciationⓘ, ISO: Mēraṭha) is a city in Meerut district of the western part of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. The city lies 80 km (50 mi) northeast of the national capital New Delhi, within the National Capital Region and 480 km (300 mi) west of the state capital Lucknow.[10]

The city is one of the largest producers of sports goods, the largest producer of musical instruments in India, and one of Asia's biggest gold markets. The city is also an education hub in western Uttar Pradesh, and is also known as the "Sports City Of India".
The city is famous for being the starting point of the 1857 rebellion against Company rule in India.
The city is also the proposed capital of Harit Pradesh, a new separate state. It has the 2nd highest per capita income in the state after Gautam Budh Nagar (Noida).[13]
India's first Regional Rapid Transit System Delhi Meerut RRTS currently being constructed in Meerut. Which will be an inter-city high-speed metro corridor.[14] It is also known as the expressway capital of Uttar Pradesh, having 3 different expressways.[15]
