José Concepción Benítez y Bermúdez (c. 1760 – August 11, 1832[2]) was mayor of Ponce, Puerto Rico in 1800.[3] He is best remembered for the creation of the Fuerte de San José in 1760 in Playa de Ponce.[4] The fort was in operation until the 1890s.[5]
