2023–2024 Georgian protests
Protests in Georgia / From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The 2023–2024 Georgian protests are a series of street demonstrations taking place throughout Georgia largely in opposition to a proposed "Law on Transparency of Foreign Influence", which requires non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to register as "agents of foreign influence" or "organizations carrying the interests of a foreign power" and disclose the sources of their income if the funds they receive from abroad amount to more than 20% of their total revenue.[10][11] The supporters of the bill say it is needed to ensure the transparency of the foreign funding and protect Georgia's sovereignty from the shady foreign influences, while the opponents, including Western countries and the European Union, have criticized the bill, holding that it will stifle democracy and freedom of press in Georgia and comparing it to the Russian foreign agent law.
