(< 900) 中古英语 been < 古英語 beon < 原始印欧语 *bheu-（变成，出现）。不规则变位形式源于古英语复合动词 bēon-wesan。

be來自根「成为，变得」，am、is、are均源自「存在」，was、were源自「停留，保持」。

be (第三人稱單數簡單現在時 is，現在分詞 being，過去式 was，過去分詞 been) be 是英语中的系动词。
