愛麗絲·華克出生於喬治亞州的一個小鎮^[4]，有兄弟姊妹八人，她最小。母親為幫傭^[5]，從小便必須打理家務^[6]。八歲時因哥哥不慎導致右眼失明^[7]。曾任教於加州大學，致力介紹非洲作家，並長期關注民權、婦女運動。

1965年，沃克与犹太民权律师Melvyn Rosenman Leventhal相遇。他们1967年3月17日在纽约市结婚。那年晚些时候夫妇搬迁到密西西比州杰克逊，成为“密西西比第一对合法结婚的跨种族夫妇”。^[8]^[9]他们受到白人的骚扰和威胁，包括三K党。他们夫妇1969年生了一个女儿Rebecca（英语：Rebecca Walker）。沃克和她的丈夫于1976年离婚。^[10]
