《嗜血法医》第七季于2012年9月30日在Showtime正式播映。本季收视率表现的十分不错，大结局“始料未及”的收视人数创全剧新高。
2011年11月18日Showtime续订了嗜血法医第七季以及第八季，两季都将有12集[1]。2012年3月Showtime宣布嗜血法医第七季将于2012年9月30日回归[2][3]。随后5月执行制片人Sara Colleton表示第八季将是最后一季[4]，并表示一些故事将穿插到第八季[5][6]。这一季的第一集将闪回童年讲述德克斯特和黛布拉小时候的故事[7]。
