皮卡迪利街已有幾個世紀的歷史,但是沒有證據顯示它曾被用作羅馬道路[1]。在中世紀,它曾被喚作「通往雷丁的道路」(the road to Reading)或「由科恩布魯克(英语:Colnbrook)而來的路」(the way from Colnbrook)[2]。在都鐸時期,沿路兩旁建築開始蓬勃起來,由於衛生環境欠佳,當局曾經出手干預,下令禁止發展,奈何房地產炒賣熾熱,市民都對新政視若無睹[3]。
