維持和平,簡稱維和,係指一啲保持和平嘅活動,特別係喺打仗之後,令敵方之間嘅和平盡量長久[1][2]。研究結論一般都同意,維和嘅活動能夠減少平民同軍事傷亡,同時會減低打仗復發嘅機會。
喺聯合國憲章嘅第7章,聯合國有表明會喺唔同嘅戰爭場面,派維和部隊盡量維持當地嘅和平,避免局勢再一次緊張而令戰爭復發。所以,喺聯合國嘅成員國入面,一般都會有共識,容許維和部隊喺戰場當地做維和工作。呢啲工作可能包括經濟同社會上嘅援助,亦包括幫助雙方實行和約嘅條款。因爲聯合國嘅維和部隊都會帶藍色嘅頭盔嚟做標記,所以佢哋亦被稱之爲“藍頭盔”(英文:Blue Berets / Blue Helmets)[1][3]。
除咗聯合國之外,其他組織都會做維和工作。例如,喺科索沃戰爭之後,北約喺科索沃成立咗維和部隊。喺蘇丹戰爭之後,非盟亦同樣喺當地成立咗維和部隊。
喺國際法之下,維和部隊係屬於中立人士,因爲佢哋並唔支持任何一邊嘅利益,純碎係鼓勵各方保持和平。因爲咁,所以佢哋名義上喺任何時間,都唔應該受任何一邊襲擊[4]。
