玉係東亞地區受歡迎嘅寶石之一，以礦物學分類，玉分為硬玉（即係翡翠，成分：NaAlSi2O6）同軟玉（透閃石、陽起石一類，成份）Ca2(Mg, Fe)5Si8O22(OH)2）。其它寶石，好多人都認為係玉石，包括蛇紋石、青金石、瑪瑙、珊瑚、大理石咁。中國東漢許慎著作《說文解字》解釋：「玉，石之美者」。
