2006年10月13號，聯合國任命潘基文做第八屆秘書長，接替卸任嘅戈菲·安南，而佢亦喺同一年12月14號宣誓就職，並且喺2007年1月1號上任。兩輪任期至2016年12月31號，由古特雷斯接任。
