甲型流感病毒属下的唯一一个物种。人们从野生鸟类身上提取出了甲流病毒的所有亚种的菌株，但鸟类本身却很少发病。一些甲流病毒的分离株（英语：primary isolate）可导致家禽和少部分人类发病。病毒有时可通过野生水鸟感染到家禽身上，而这可导致人类流感瘟疫爆发。
