諾亞·韋伯斯特

諾亞·韋伯斯特（英語：Noah Webster，1758年10月16日—1843年5月28日），美國辭典編纂者、課本編寫作者、拼寫改革倡導者，政論家和編輯，獲譽為「美國學術和教育之父」。他的藍皮拼字書教會了五代美國兒童怎樣拼寫，在美國，其名字等同於「字典」，尤其是首版於1828年的現代《韋氏詞典》。

生平

韋伯斯特於1758年出生於定居在康乃狄克州西哈特福市的一個北方人家庭。他有兩個兄弟查爾斯和亞伯拉罕，和兩個姐妹梅西和耶路撒。他的父親是一個農場主和紡織工，是康乃狄克州州長約翰・韋伯斯特的後人；母親則是普列茅茨領地長官威廉・布雷德福的後代。16歲時他進入康乃狄克州唯一一所大學耶魯大學學習。時逢美國獨立戰爭，由於食品短缺，許多課程轉到康乃狄克州的格拉斯頓伯里，獨立戰爭期間，他加入了康乃狄克州地方軍。1778年畢業之後，由於負擔不起學習法律的費用，他到格拉斯頓伯里，哈特福市和西哈特福的中小學教書。1781年他獲得了法律學位，但畢生都未從事法律相關的工作，而是在中小學教學，並試圖建立一些小規模學校，可是都不是很成功。

直到1781年，韋伯斯特都主張新民族的擴張，認為美國民族主義高於歐洲，因為美國價值觀更優越。

「美國洞見了這些荒謬——她看到歐洲國家不同教派之間爭論不休，商業，人口等各方面發展受到阻礙和制約，因為人們的意識就像身體一樣過度膨脹，『被政策和迷信雙重束縛』：她嘲笑他們的愚蠢並規避他們的錯誤，將自己的帝國建立在普遍寬容上：她哺育各種宗教——她保護個人的神聖權力(這讓歐洲人怎樣的大驚失色啊！)；她使見解不同的人生活在至高的和諧中……她終將升到偉大和榮耀的頂峰，相比之下，古希臘羅馬以及現代帝國都將黯然失色。」

他以拼寫書和字典為美國民族主義知識界的奠基做貢獻。在十八世紀八十年代，韋伯斯特是一個直言無諱的聯邦制擁護者。在政治理論上，他降低了美德的重要性(共和主義的核心價值觀)，強調廣泛傳播的物權(自由主義的關鍵元素)。

韋伯斯特婚姻美滿，並成為哈特福市的精英，但並不富有。1793年亞歷山大·漢密爾頓以1500美元的薪金聘請他到紐約編輯一份聯邦制擁護者的報紙。12月他創立了紐約第一份日報《American Minerva》(後來的《商業廣告報》)。他做了四年編輯，寫了相當於20期的文章和社論。他還出版了半周刊《The Herald, A Gazette for the country》(後來的《紐約觀察家》)。作為黨羽，他很快就被擁護傑斐遜的共和黨人公開抨擊為「懦弱的，自以為是的愛國者」，「無可救藥的瘋子」，「虛偽的饒舌者……假裝博學者和庸醫」，即使是聯邦制擁護者科伯特也把他描述為「擁護聯邦制的賣國者」，「偉大的傻瓜和無恥的騙子」。這個文字大師非常苦惱，就算是「民主」，「人民」，「平等」這樣的字眼都會在公眾辯論中使他困擾，因為這些詞都是形而上的抽象，要麼沒有意義，要麼有意義但沒有凡人能理解。

韋伯斯特崇尚法國的極端思想，不像大多數聯邦制擁護者，他支持處決路易十六。他強調中立的對外政策，但當法國大使埃德蒙·吉尼特在美國建立了一個前雅各賓的「民主共和團」干預美國政治和攻擊華盛頓時，韋伯斯特譴責他們，並讓他擁護聯邦制的編輯同僚們「既不贊成也不反對這些團體，他們是異國的植物：和平之光會毀滅他們」。

幾十年來他都是新美國多產作家，出版課本，為聯邦政黨寫政論，在報紙上發表了大量的文章(現代他的作品書目多達655頁)。

拼寫書和字典

作為教師，他不喜歡美國的初等學校。它們常常過於擁擠，70個各種年齡的孩子擠在只有一間房的校舍里。只有很少未經訓練的教師，沒有課桌，從英國來的課本也讓不能讓人滿意。韋伯斯特認為美國人應該學習美國課本。於是他著手寫一部三冊的概略《英語語法》，由一冊拼寫(1783年出版)，一冊語法(1784年出版)，一冊閱讀(1785年出版)組成。他的目標是以美國的方式訓練兒童。他認為自己最大的貢獻是在英語語法和發音「炫學的叫嚷」中「拯救了「我們的民族語言」。他抱怨英國上流社會敗壞了英語，他們建立了自己拼寫和發音的標準。韋伯斯特認為對希臘語和拉丁語的學習不應超過對英語語法的學習。他認為美語的標準「和美國文明和教會機構的共和標準是一樣的」，這意味著大部分民眾將控制語言；政府中流行的主權必須伴隨著語言的流行使用。「事實是大眾的習語是語言的規則，所有偏離這一標準的都必是錯誤的。」

拼字書的優點在於它易於教授，它的難度隨年齡的增長而增加。
