蕭邦一共寫過3組鋼琴獨奏練習曲（Études），共27首。分為作品10號（12首）、作品25號（12首）和另外3首未命名的練習曲。

蕭邦創作練習曲時並沒有加上標題，但後來有一些約定俗成的暱稱，如練習曲作品10第3號及第12號的「離別」、「革命」等。
亨樂出版社把該練習曲集的op 10 no1、op 25 no 6、no 10及11的難度評為最高級（第9級），這套練習曲中難度評級最低的是op 10 no 9和op 25 no 1與未編號第一及第三首並列，被評為第6級。
由於蕭邦的練習曲結合技術上的挑戰和聲歌手樂上的美感，因此風行度歷久不衰，並且經常用作演奏用曲目。在當時已有不少作曲家受到其影響，如李斯特創作了多首音樂會練習曲（concert étude）。
利奧波德·戈多夫斯基共為蕭邦的練習曲作了53首演繹曲，弗里德里希·維勒也作了18首演繹曲。
第一部練習曲作品創於1829至1832年間，於1833年發表。當時的蕭邦只有23歲，但是在巴黎已經是一個小有名氣的作曲家，並在當地與李斯特相識。他把此作獻給「他的朋友法蘭茲·李斯特」（à son ami Franz Liszt）。
蕭邦第二組練習曲第25號創於1832至1836年，發表於1837年。
餘下的3首練習曲「新練習曲三首」（Trois nouvelles études）沒有命名，亦無作品號，是在1839年為伊格納茲·莫謝萊斯和弗朗索瓦-約瑟夫·費蒂斯的鋼琴教本 《Méthode des méthodes de piano》 而作，於1840至1841年發表。這3首沒有其餘的24首來的情感鮮明。
