吳越國在939年分蘇州設置秀州，治所在嘉興縣（今浙江省嘉興市），宋朝轄境約當今浙江省除海寧市的杭州灣以北、桐鄉市以東，上海市吳淞江以南地區。州境內滾海，在境內設有市舶司。宋寧宗慶元元年（1190年）改為嘉興府。
