淘玉是紐西蘭的一項文化活動,政府僅允許在南島西海岸的指定海灘上進行,並且規定淘玉者只能夠帶走自己能夠獨自攜帶的玉石,[21][22]在規定以外地區淘玉以及攜帶超過標準的量都屬於違法行為。2009年,大衛·安東尼·薩克斯頓(David Anthony Saxton)和他的兒子摩根·大衛·薩克斯頓(Morgan David Saxton)因用直升機從西海岸南部偷紐西蘭玉而被判處兩年半監禁。[23]
