北魏置婉儀。唐朝初年不置。唐玄宗開元年間，婉儀為六儀之一，位順儀之下，芳儀之上，員一人，正二品。北宋初年也不置順容，宋真宗大中祥符六年（1013年）置為內命婦之一，屬「嬪」，在順容之下，為正二品內命婦。章懿李皇后、章惠皇后都曾經擔任婉儀。
