跟隨大儒田何學習《易經》，學成東歸，田何對門人說：「《易》以東矣。」丁寬至雒陽，從周王孫學習古義，號《周氏傳》。寫作《易說》三萬言。傳授給同郡的田王孫。漢景帝時，吳楚七國之亂，梁孝王劉武任命丁寬為將軍，抵抗吳楚，號稱丁將軍。田王孫授施讎、孟喜、梁丘賀。《易經》有施、孟、梁丘之學。
