NGC 3972是一個位於大熊座的螺旋星系，1789年4月14日由威廉·赫歇爾發現^[7]，距離地球6600萬光年，徑向速度7005846000000000000♠846 km/s^[2]，屬於NGC 3992星系群（英語：NGC 3992 Group）^[4]。2011年4月26日，人們在星系內發現Ia超新星 SN 2011by，爆發位置在星系核偏東6995256951250988054♠5.3″、偏北6995925994130919215♠19.1″處^[8]。
