紐芬蘭-拉布拉多
班克斯於1766年被選為皇家學會會員,同年,也就是他23歲的時候,他和居士坦丁·馬爾格雷夫男爵以繼續學習他們博物學的目的一起搭乘HMS Niger號三帆快速戰艦前往紐芬蘭-拉布拉多。他出版了第一個按照林奈雙命名法描述在紐芬蘭-拉布拉多地區的動物和植物的書籍。他日記上描述的關於紐芬蘭遠征的內容在最近的南澳皇家地理學會上被重新發現。[9][10]班克斯也記錄了34種鳥類,其中包括了在1844年滅絕的大海雀。5月7號,在他們經過紐芬蘭大淺灘的時候,他注意到有一大群「企鵝」在船邊游泳。他在沙托灣(Chateau Bay, Labrador)採集了一個標本,這個標本後來鑑定出來是大海雀。[11]
他本來想要參加庫克船長的於1772年5月13日開始的第二次航行,但是因為班克斯提出的關於在庫克船長新船的科學要求的議案難於達成,英國海軍部覺得班克斯提出的要求無法接受,於是在無事先通知的情況下取消了對他參與出海航行的許可。同年7月,他和丹尼爾·索蘭德搭乘勞倫斯爵士號(Sir Lawrence)造訪了蘇格蘭和冰島西邊的懷特島(Isle of Wight)[10],當他們回來的時候他們帶回了許多植物物種。1773年在保羅·雪梨的陪同下,他到南威爾斯旅行。[13]當他在倫敦定居後他開始他編寫《花譜》的工作。與此同時他還和很多科學家保持聯絡。同年他被選為瑞典皇家科學院外籍院士。1774年加入業餘愛好者協會。他在之後的1778年到1797年都擔任這個協會的秘書。1778年11月30日,他當選為皇家學會會長,[10]他在這個職位上當了超過41年。
