北魏景明年間置，治所在今陝西省西鄉縣。屬洋州。轄今陝西省西鄉、鎮巴等縣一帶。隋開皇三年（583年）廢。唐天寶元年（742年）又改洋州為洋川郡，治所在興道縣（今陝西省洋縣），轄境相當今陝西省西鄉、洋縣、鎮巴、佛坪等縣地。下轄西鄉縣、興道縣、黃金縣（今今陝西省洋縣良心鄉西溝村）、洋源縣（今陝西省鎮巴縣小洋鄉）、華陽縣（今陝西省洋縣華陽鎮，749年改為真符縣，改治今陝西省洋縣茅坪鎮）。乾元元年（758年）復為洋州。
