最早於公元前272年設立，當時秦國滅義渠國，在此設立朝那縣，屬於北地郡。
北魏神龜元年（518年），廢朝那縣，置黃石縣（寧夏彭陽溝口鄉），屬長城郡。
另外，《帝王世紀》作者，西晉皇甫謐是朝那縣人。
