皮卡迪利街已有几个世纪的历史,但是没有证据显示它曾被用作罗马道路[1]。在中世纪,它曾被唤作“通往雷丁的道路”(the road to Reading)或“由科恩布鲁克(英语:Colnbrook)而来的路”(the way from Colnbrook)[2]。在都铎时期,沿路两旁建筑开始蓬勃起来,由于卫生环境欠佳,当局曾经出手干预,下令禁止发展,奈何房地产炒卖炽热,市民都对新政视若无睹[3]。
