亨利·史坦威（Heinrich Engelhard Steinweg，后来改名为Henry E. Steinway）于1797年出生，是一位德国裔美国人。1836年，亨利·史坦威在他的厨房中打造了他第一部钢琴。1850年亨利·史坦威跟他的妻儿移民到美国。

• 1853年，亨利·史坦威在美国曼哈顿成立了施坦威公司（Steinway & Sons）^[8]。他第一部在公司生产的钢琴现在于纽约市大都会艺术博物馆展出。
• 自1855年开始，施坦威钢琴在一些欧美的展覧中获得多个金牌奖。
• 1857年，施坦威建立了第一个施坦威钢琴展示中心。
• 1866年，施坦威公司建立了施坦威演奏厅。
• 在1871年时，亨利·史坦威去世，由他两个儿子弗里德里希·西奥多·史坦威（英语：Friedrich Theodor Steinweg）（Friedrich Theodor Steinweg）和威廉·史坦威（英语：William Steinway）（William Steinway）接管其业务。
• 1880年，施坦威家族回归德国，在德国汉堡的工厂开始销售Steinway-Haus钢琴。
• 1909年，将施坦威的业务推展到柏林。
• 1929年，施坦威公司制造了一部有164个琴键和四个制音踏板双键盘钢琴。
• 1972年，经过一场官司后，施坦威公司被卖了给哥伦比亚广播公司。
• 1985年，哥伦比亚广播公司将施坦威公司卖了给一班投资者，公司则改名为施坦威音乐资产公司（Steinway Musical Properties, Inc）。
• 1995年，施坦威音乐资产公司与塞尔玛公司合并，成为施坦威乐器公司（Steinway Musical Instruments）。

价格

施坦威钢琴的价格一直是同行中最高的：2008年施坦威在汉堡制作了现在世界上最贵的大钢琴，价格达120万欧元。^[9]这架钢琴的制作共花去了四年时间，^[10]这架钢琴被取名为“和谐之声”（Sound of Harmony），这个钢琴使用了40多种不同的木材，其钢琴盖上由中国画家石齐进行装饰。^[9]其所有人是郭庆祥，2010年上海世博会曾展出过这架钢琴。^[10]

拍卖价格最高的大钢琴也是由施坦威公司制造于1833年至1887年间的纽约市的，1997年这架钢琴在伦敦佳士得的拍卖价达120万美元。^[11]这次打破了前世界第一、也是由施坦威创造的1980年的最贵大钢琴价格记录36万美元。^[12]这架钢琴现展览于克拉克艺术学院。^[13]

世界最贵的直立式钢琴由施坦威制造于1970年的汉堡，最早由约翰·蓝侬以1,500美元的价格买下，^[14]他用这架钢琴演奏和记录过《Imagine》等。2000年在英国通过拍卖行私下交易给流行音乐家乔治·迈克尔，价格高达167万英镑。^[15]
