连雅堂在《雅言》说：“贫家子弟无力读书，为人学徒，以数钱买《千金谱》一本，就店中长辈而读之，可识千余字。是书为泉人士所撰，中有方言，又列货物之名，为将来记账之用。若聪颖者可再读他书及简明尺牍并学珠算，不三四年可以略通文法，而书算皆能矣。”1984年。吴登神在《南瀛文献》第29期上发表〈千金谱考释〉，对全篇每字句都加以标音及注释。[2]
内容
文句押韵，用台湾话朗诵[4]。其内容多为与日常生活事物，作为识字基础教材，作为家庭教育的教材。昔日台湾俗谚：“字是随身宝，财是国家珍，一字值千金，千金难买圣贤心。”（Jī sī sûi sin pó, châi sī kok ka tin, chi̍t jī ta̍t chhian kim, chhian kim lân bé sèng hiân sim.）出典为此书。[2]
