生平
陶元素是宣德十年（1435年）乙卯科举人，正统元年（1436年）联捷进士[2]，因为双亲年老请求归养，敎授诸生不出仕，天顺三年（1459年）、成化七年（1471年）分别获聘任为浙江、河南乡试考官，选拔士子号称得人，尤其重视品德。他年轻时已奇才，谨慎交游，虽然贫穷也不曾干谒，自六部尚书以下的官员都仰慕其风节，总会前来造访，家居时的礼仪悉遵从朱熹而参以时制，读书手不释卷，经史和筮卜无不精研，七十四岁才去世[1]。
