Officially adopted the national flag,[1] in use from 1869 on colonial gunboats.[2] The Union Jack was described as the "superior flag", to be flown above the New Zealand flag prior to 1965.[3] In use sporadically as a national flag until the adoption of the current flag in 1902.[4]
