牧夫座（拉丁语：Boötes/boʊˈoʊtiːz/）是北天的一个星座，在天球上的位置跨越赤纬0°至+60°，赤经13时至16时。名称源自希腊Βοώτης，Boōtēs，意思是牧羊人或农夫（照字义是驾牛者，与拉丁语的bovis“牛”同源）。在名称中的“ö”是分音符号，意思是每个“o”要明确的个别发音。

牧夫座是现代的88个星座之一，也是第二世纪的天文学家托勒密叙述的48个星座之一。它含了全夜空中的第四亮星（实际视星等应为第三亮，但若将肉眼无法解析的南门二联星系统视为单一恒星则为第四亮），橙巨星的大角星。牧夫座也是其他许多亮星的家，包括8颗比4等亮的星和21颗5等以上的星，总共有29颗肉眼可以轻松看见的恒星。

星座神话

有三说：

• 牧夫是宙斯和卡利斯托（Callisto）之子阿卡斯（Arcas），有一天，宙斯与卡莉斯托之父莱卡翁（Lycaon）进餐，莱卡翁为验证宙斯的身份，便把阿卡斯剁成肉酱（亦有说此乃莱卡翁之子所为），宙斯得悉大怒，杀死莱卡翁之子并将莱卡翁变成豺狼座，将阿卡斯剩肉拾起重组，交予迈亚（Maia）照顾。

• 牧夫为酒神狄俄倪索斯之徒伊卡里奥斯（Icarius），有一次伊卡里奥斯把新调的酒给牧羊人尝试，牧羊人喝醉以为伊卡里奥斯在酒中下毒，迷糊间杀死伊卡里奥斯。伊卡里奥斯之狗逃出并告诉伊卡里奥斯之女埃拉戈涅（Erigone），埃拉戈涅悲恸不已悬梁自尽，而狗也伤心而死，宙斯把伊卡里奥斯变成牧夫座，埃拉戈涅为室女座，把狗变成大犬座（亦有说是小犬座）。

• 宙斯垂涎卡莉斯托的美色，对其施暴，后来卡莉斯托诞下儿子阿卡斯，宙斯之妻赫拉要惩罚卡莉斯托勾搭其夫，扠著卡莉斯托之颈按她在地，把她变为一只黑熊。十五年来卡莉斯托一直隐居森林，有一天，她重遇儿子阿卡斯，可是阿卡斯并不知道眼前的黑熊就是其生母，准备举矛自卫。电光火石间，宙斯以一阵旋风卷他们上天，卡莉斯托变成大熊座，而阿卡斯则变成牧夫座。

深空天体

牧夫座是在天球上远离我们银河系盘面这一部分的一个星座，所以没有疏散星团和星云；反而是有许多明亮的球状星团和昏暗的星系^[1]。球状星团NGC 5466的亮度超过9.1等，直径有11弧秒^[3]。它是一个结构非常松散的球状星团，并且只有少量的恒星，因此在望远镜下看起来像一个恒星数量非常多的疏散星团。NGC 5466在夏普力-索耶集中度分类法属于最松散的第12级，反应出其不集中的性质^[4]。它的大直径明显地指出它具有低的面亮度，所以看起来的亮度远低于星表上标示的9.1等，需要大型的业余天文望远镜来观赏。一般的业余天文望远镜只能看见十余颗恒星^[5]。

牧夫座有两个较明亮的星系。NGC 5248（科德韦尔45）在哈伯序列是Sc的星系（螺旋臂松弛的螺旋星系），视星等10.2，视直径是6.5和4.9弧秒^[3]。距离地球5,000万光年的NGC 5248是室女座星系团的星系成员；它的螺旋臂外缘昏暗，并且可以看见电离氢区、尘埃带和年轻的星群^[6]。NGC 5676是另一个Sc星系，视星等10.9，视直径是3.9和2.0弧秒^[3]。其它的星系还有NGC 5008，分类为Sc发射线星系^[7]；NGC 5548，S型的西佛星系^[8]；NGC 5653，S HII型的星系^[9]；NGC 5778（分类与NGC 5825相同）^[10]，是一个椭圆星系，并且视这个星系团最亮的^[11]；NGC 5886^[12]和NGC 5888^[13]，都是SBb星系。NGC 5698是棒旋星系，在2005年出现一颗超新星SN 2005bc，峰值光度达到15.3等，因而受到注意。

在更远处有一个直径2亿5,000万光年的牧夫座空洞，一个空旷、没有星系的巨大空间。它的距离大约是7亿光年，是罗伯特·科什纳和同事在1981年发现的^[14]。超越这个空洞和在这个星系的边界有两个超星系团，距离分别在大约8亿3,000万光年和10亿光年。

流星雨

牧夫座是象限仪座流星雨的家园。这个流星雨是流星数量最多产的流星雨之一，于1853年1月发现，1864年由亚历山大的Hershell命名^[15]。辐射点在牧夫座，靠近天枪一（牧夫座κ）^[16]，之前的星座名称是象限仪座。象限仪座流星雨的流星都很黯淡，但在1月3-4日极大期，每小时的流星数量大约是100颗^[17][18]。象限仪座流星雨的每小时天顶流星数的峰值大约是130颗；它也是出现期很窄的流星雨。象限仪座流星雨因为辐射点低和经常遇到坏天气，成为因难以观测而出名的流星雨。有关这个流星雨的母体已经争议了数十年^[15]，彼得·杰尼斯认为母体是小行星2003 EH₁^[19]，然而2003 EH₁可能与彗星C/1490 Y₁有所关连，他在过去被认为是象限仪座流星雨潜在的母体^[20][21]。2003 EH₁原本是属于木星族的短周期彗星；在500年前经历了灾难性分手事件。象限仪座流星雨现在是处于休眠状态^[22]，但在1982年、1985年、和2004年曾经非常活跃^[23]。来自这个流星雨的流星似乎常常会有蓝白色的色调和适中的速度，每秒41.5至43公里^[24]。

在1984年4月28日，常规的目视观测者弗兰克威特，从00:00至2:30，在通常平静的大角星观测到了显著的爆发。透过他的6公分望远镜，他观察到433颗流星从靠近大角星附近，直径不到1°的视场出现。彼得·杰尼斯评论这次爆发类似"典型的尘埃足迹穿越" ^[25]。牧夫座α星流星雨通常开始于4月14日，峰值落在27日和28日，结束于5月12日^[26]。它的流星速度慢，大约在每秒20.9公里^[27]，可能与彗星73P/施瓦斯曼-瓦茨曼3号彗星有关连，但这还只是理论上的联结^[26]。

在曙光中的一颗象限仪座流星。

六月牧夫座流星雨也称为天龙座ι流星雨，与彗星7P/庞士-温尼克彗星相关联，最早是在1916年5月27日被威廉F丹宁确认^[28]。这个流星雨，流星的速度缓慢，在1916年之前没有被观测的资料。因为在之前地球并未穿越这颗彗星的尘埃尾，直到7P/庞士-温尼克彗星的轨道受到木星的摄动，造成它的与地球轨道接近至0.03AU，而首度观测到六月牧夫座流星雨。在1982年，E. A. Reznikov发现1916年的爆发是1819年的彗星释放出来的物质^[29]。但因为7P/庞士-温尼克彗星的轨道不在适合的位置上，直到1998年才再度观察到另一次的爆发。不过，1998年6月27日的流星雨辐射点在牧夫座，稍后被证实为7P/庞士-温尼克彗星相关。这些流星令人难以置信的长寿，最亮的流星痕迹持续了数秒钟的时间。各地观察到的爆发，有许多的火球拖着长长的绿色尾迹，甚至投下一些阴影，最大的天顶每小时流星数达到每小时200-300颗流星^[30]。在2002年，两位俄罗斯天文徐家确认这颗彗星在1825年的喷发造成了1998年的爆发^[31]，并预期来自1819年、1825年和1830年喷发的颗粒会在2004年6月23日进入地球的大气层。预期中的流星雨不如1998年的壮观，被证实的每小时天顶流星数是每小时16-20颗的流星。预测在未来的50年内，六月牧夫座流星雨不会有特别显著的爆发^[32]。在通常情况下，每小时只能看见1-2颗度很慢且黯淡的流星；六月牧夫座流星雨的平均星等是5.0。它们是由天龙座α和牧夫座-天龙座释出。这个流星雨从6月27日持续至7月5日，极大期落在6月28日^[33]。六月牧夫座流星雨属于第三集的流星雨（变化无常）^[34]，进入的平均速度是18公/秒，辐射点在牧夫座β星北方约7度^[35]。
