河北，是广州人对广东广州市的珠江以北，即当时的越秀、东山、荔湾等区的泛称[1]，河北隔江南望正是河南海珠区。正由于河北为政治、文化、商业地段，人财旺盛，反观当时海珠区仍是渔村、农田，甚至乱葬岗[2]。
