在拉丁文中,“Burana”是班恩狄克波恩的缩写,因而得名。由于作品是在修道院发现的,因此很大程度上是当时身处修院内,自称为“哥利亚”(Goliard,即对传统教会的腐败深感不满的神职人员及神学生,亦厌倦教会内因循旧的教条化生活,因转而以玩世不恭的心态去面对,并为此而起的名称)所写,以诗歌和文字去讽刺当时的天主教会。后来的研究确认了部分诗篇的作者,当中有布卢瓦的彼得、Walter of Châtillon(英语:Walter of Châtillon)等。但由于这两人在有生之年并未有到访过班恩狄克波恩修道院一带,因此亦有可能是由其他人流传并抄写而得而保存的。
