古海洋学(英语:Paleoceanography)
是研究过去地质时代的海洋历史,包括循环、化学、生物学、地质学和沉积模式以及生物生产力。古海洋学研究使科学界能够利用环境模型和不同指标物证,重建过去不同时间的古气候,并评估海洋系统对全球气候中的影响。 古海洋学研究也与古气候学密切相关。
古海洋学利用间接方法来推断有关海洋过去状态和演变的信息。 例如地球化学间接方法包括长链有机分子(例如烯酮)、稳定和放射性同位素以及稀有金属[1]。 此外,沉积物岩心也很有用。 古海洋学领域与沉积学和古生物学密切相关。
海水表面温度 (SST) 记录可以从深海沉积物岩心中提取,使用氧同位素比和镁与钙的比例 (Mg/Ca)。提取这些资料可从浮游生物贝壳分泌物中、长链有机分子(如烯酮)、 靠近海面的热带珊瑚,以及来自软体动物的贝壳 [2]。
氧同位素比 (δ18O),因受海水温度而异,故可用于重建海水表面温度。若与海水处于热力学平衡状态,浮游生物在建造它们的外壳时会吸收氧气,若在温暖的水域中形成时,它们的 δ18O 含量会减少[3]。 当这些贝壳沉淀时,会形成海底沉积物,其 δ18O 可用于推断过去的海水表面温度[4]. 然而,海水中氧同位素比率也受其他因素影响。列如大陆冰盖中的冰也可能会影响海水δ18O。大陆冰盖中的淡水其 δ18O 值较低。因此在冰期,海水 δ18O 升高,在此期间形成的方解石外壳具有较大的 δ18O 值[5][6].
在 CaCO3 壳中用镁代替钙可以代替形成壳的海水表面温度。除了温度之外,Mg/Ca 比还受其他几个影响因素,例如生命效应、外壳清洁、死后和沉积后溶解效应等[2]。 目前Mg/Ca 比率已成功量化了在末次冰期期间所发生热带冷却[7]。
烯酮是由藻类光合作用产生的长链、复杂的有机分子。它们对温度敏感,而且可以从海洋沉积物中提取。使用烯酮可代表海水表面温度和藻类之间更直接的关系,无需了解 在研究CaCO3中所需的生物和物理-化学热力学关系[8]。使用烯酮的另一个优点是它是光合作用的产物,需要在表层的阳光下形成。因此,它可以更能代表海水表面温度[2]。
推断深海温度历史最常用的替代指标是底栖有孔虫和介形虫中的 Mg/Ca 比率。由 Mg/Ca 比率推断的温度已经证实,在晚更新世冰期期间,深海的冷却温度差高达 3 °C[2]。 一项值得注意的研究是 Lear [2002]等人的研究。他们在 9 个地点校准底部水温与 Mg/Ca 比率公式,涵盖各种深度和多达 6 种不同底栖有孔虫(取决于位置)的样本 [9]。发现底部水温和Mg/Ca 比率关系是一个指数方程。 其中 Mg/Ca 是底栖有孔虫中的 Mg/Ca 比值,BWT 是底水温度 [10]。
沉积物记录可以告诉我们很多关于我们过去的资料,并有助于对未来做出推断。古海洋学领域的研究可以追溯到 1930 年代或更早[11]。 目前使用沉积物岩心扫描方法,可以实施分割时间的重建研究。类似于在南极的冰芯记录中进行的研究[12]。 古生物体的相对丰度可利用一定时间间断内。使用古生产力方法(例如测量总硅藻丰度)来估计[13]。沉积物记录也可以提供过去天气模式和海洋环流的资料,例如 Deschamps 等人。描述了他们对楚科奇-阿拉斯加(Chukchi-Alaskan)和加拿大博福特边缘(Canadian Beaufort Margins)沉积物记录的研究[14]。
推算断过去盐度历史是一个比较具挑战性的工作。与氧同位素相比,利用岩芯记录中的过量氘可以更好地推断海面盐度。因为硅藻的相对丰度仅限于某些盐度范围内,所以硅藻可以提供半定量的盐度记录 [15]。根据资料,过去全球水循环和海洋盐度平衡有变化,北大西洋盐分增加,印度洋和太平洋的亚热带盐分减少[16]。 [17]. 随着海水循环的变化,盐的垂直分布也发生了变化[18]。 淡水的大量入侵和盐度的变化也可能导致海冰范围的减少[19].
推断过去的海洋环流及其变化,可利用下列几种间接证据。它们包括碳同位素比、镉/钙 (Cd/Ca) 比、镤/钍同位素(231Pa 和 230Th)、放射性碳活度(δ14C)、钕同位素(143Nd 和 144Nd)和分选在 10 和 63 微米之间的深海沉积物。 [2]碳同位素和镉/钙比率的变化,部分是受于海底水化学的影响,而海底水化学受其形成的来源有关 [20] [21]。这些比率也受到复杂化的生物、生态和地球化学作用的影响。
硼同位素比 (δ11B) 可用于推断海洋近期和千年时间尺度,酸度、pH 和碱度的变化,这主要是由大气中的 CO2 浓度和海洋中的碳酸氢根离子浓度造成的。 在西南太平洋的珊瑚中,发现 δ11B 随海洋 pH 值的变化而变化,并表明诸如太平洋十年涛动 (PDO) 等气候变化。亦可以模拟由于大气 CO2 浓度上升而导致的海洋酸化的影响[22]。 浮游生物壳中的δ11B也可用来推断过去几百万年大气 CO2 浓度的变化 [23]。
