朱吾的位置原为越裳国的领土，秦代属于象郡。汉设置日南郡，郡治在朱吾县。东汉时郡治改为西卷。晋朝、南朝宋时，朱吾都属日南郡所辖，亦谓之朱吾戍。南朝齐时仍旧称朱吾县。隋代时，朱吾县改属比景郡，唐属景州，后被废[1]。
