南朝梁置，治所在义伦县（今海南省儋州市西北）。隋朝废。唐朝武德四年（621年）复置，治舍城县（今海南省海口市琼山区东南）。初置时辖境有今海南省，唐时缩，仅有今海口、文昌、琼海、琼山、定安、澄迈等地。天宝元年（742年）改为珠崖郡。乾元元年（758年）复旧。北宋开宝五年（972年）废入琼州。
