該程式語言於Ignite 2021上首次公佈，規範於2021年3月發佈。[4] [5]由於Microsoft Power Fx有點類似於電子試算表，所以門檻較低，特別對於Excel用戶來說，他們上手更容易。Power Fx也受到Pascal語言、Wolfram Mathematica和Miranda等程式語言和工具的影響[6][7]。
Power Fx語言是由Vijay Mital、Robin Abraham、Shon Katzenberger和Darryl Rubin領導的微軟團隊開發。[7]Power Fx將作為開源軟件提供。 [8]不過截至2021年7月，Microsoft Power Fx只有文檔是開源的。 [9]2021年11月2日，微軟將Power Fx 的原始碼上傳到了 GitHub，即Power Fx正式開放源代碼。[10]
