魏國圍攻趙國邯鄲，申不害剛剛接觸韓昭侯，不知韓昭侯的想法，怕說的話不符合韓昭侯的意圖。韓昭侯問申不害：「我幫助趙國還是魏國。」申不害說：「這是安危關鍵，國家大事。臣請深思苦想。」於是對趙紹、韓沓說：「二位都是國之辯士，作為人臣，上言怎會一定被採用，只是盡忠而已。」二人各向韓昭侯以事進議。申不害視王暗中觀察韓昭侯的喜好，於是針對他的喜好進言，韓昭侯很高興。
