唐朝末年，王宗夔開始在王建帳下為親校，攻打龍州（今四川省平武縣南壩鎮），殺死龍州刺史田昉，有功，官至兼中書令。王建彌留之際，他和王宗弼、王宗瑤、王宗綰一起受遺詔輔政。後主王衍即位，封他為琅琊郡王。
