1955年，其加入中國人民解放軍。歷任班長、團政治處宣傳股文化教員、師政治部組織科、青年科幹事，軍政治部幹部處幹事、師長、集團軍副政委、政委。中國人民解放軍總政治部主任助理、副主任。1994年，擔任濟南軍區政治委員。1996年11月，擔任北京軍區政委。2000年，晉升為上將軍銜[1]。
