旋轉曲面

旋轉曲面是一條平面曲線C繞它所在平面的一條直線L旋轉一周所生產的曲面，其中曲線C稱之為該旋轉曲面的母線，直線L稱為該旋轉曲面的旋轉軸。

曲線x=2+cos z的一部分繞着z軸旋轉。

例子包括球面，由圓繞着其直徑旋轉而成，以及環面，由圓繞着外面的一條直線旋轉而成。

面積

如果曲線由參數方程${\displaystyle x(t)}$、${\displaystyle y(t)}$給出，其中${\displaystyle a<t<b}$，且旋轉軸是${\displaystyle y}$軸，則旋轉曲面${\displaystyle A}$的面積由以下的積分給出：

${\displaystyle A=2\pi \int _{a}^{b}x(t)\ {\sqrt {\left({dx \over dt}\right)^{2}+\left({dy \over dt}\right)^{2}}}\,dt,}$

條件是${\displaystyle x(t)}$非負。這個公式與古爾丁定理是等價的。

${\displaystyle \left({dx \over dt}\right)^{2}+\left({dy \over dt}\right)^{2}}$

來自勾股定理，表示曲線的一小段弧，像弧長的公式那樣。${\displaystyle 2\pi x(t)}$是這一小段的（重心的）路徑。

如果曲線的方程是y = f(x)，a ≤ x ≤ b，則積分變為：

${\displaystyle A=2\pi \int _{a}^{b}y{\sqrt {1+\left({\frac {dy}{dx}}\right)^{2}}}\,dx}$（繞着x軸旋轉），

${\displaystyle A=2\pi \int _{a}^{b}x{\sqrt {1+\left({\frac {dx}{dy}}\right)^{2}}}\,dy}$（繞着y軸旋轉）。

這可以由以上的公式推出。

例如，單位半徑的球面由曲線x(t) = sin(t)，y(t) = cos(t)旋轉而得，其中${\displaystyle 0<t<\pi }$。所以，它的面積為：

${\displaystyle A=2\pi \int _{0}^{\pi }\sin(t){\sqrt {\left(\cos(t)\right)^{2}+\left(\sin(t)\right)^{2}}}\,dt=2\pi \int _{0}^{\pi }\sin(t)\,dt=4\pi .}$

對於半徑為r的圓${\displaystyle y(x)={\sqrt {r^{2}-x^{2}}}}$繞着x軸旋轉所得的曲面，

${\displaystyle A=2\pi \int _{-r}^{r}{\sqrt {r^{2}-x^{2}}}\,{\sqrt {1+{\frac {x^{2}}{r^{2}-x^{2}}}}}\,dx}$

${\displaystyle =2\pi \int _{-r}^{r}r\,{\sqrt {r^{2}-x^{2}}}\,{\sqrt {\frac {1}{r^{2}-x^{2}}}}\,dx}$

${\displaystyle =2\pi \int _{-r}^{r}r\,dx}$

${\displaystyle =4\pi r^{2}\,}$
