南朝梁大同二年（536年）置寧巴郡，屬萬州。治所在石鼓縣（今四川省宣漢縣西南東林鄉）。轄境相當今四川省宣漢縣西南。承聖二年（553年）被西魏佔領。西魏改寧巴郡為臨清郡。
