BitDefender誕生於2001年11月，代替了它之前的AVX（AntiVirus eXpress）系列產品。該產品包括有家庭版、商業版、企業版和伺服器版。家庭版支援Microsoft Windows、Symbian OS和Windows Mobile作業系統，其他版本則支援Windows、Linux和FreeBSD作業系統。最新版本的功能包括病毒、間諜軟件防護、防火牆、垃圾郵件過濾器等組件。另外，其網站提供免費的簡單線上查毒。
在2013年初，BitDefender推出了第一款具有常駐防護的防毒軟件：Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition（頁面存檔備份，存於互聯網檔案館）。
中國的保安軟件360防毒曾使用過BitDefender的引擎與病毒庫。[1]
2021年12月，BitDefender不再支援免費版殺毒軟件。[2]
2022年3月，BitDefender釋出基於Total Security的免費防毒軟件，且此新釋出的免費版與先前的版本相比有所不同。[3]另外，由台灣軟件代理公司德知士資訊進行台灣本島與金門馬祖等地區實體與線上正式代理商，提供必特防毒Bitdefender中文售後服務。並將視市場需求，預期在2023年提出新一版中文化的Bitdefender必特防毒系列產品。
