東漢永建三年（128年）改鍾武縣置，治所在今湖南省衡陽縣西北。後置侯國。三國時，東吳復為縣。隋朝開皇九年（589年）廢入衡陽縣。唐朝武德四年（621年）復置。七年又廢，入衡陽縣。東漢至南朝宋屬零陵郡，南齊至南陳屬湘東郡。唐朝初年，屬衡州。
