轉基因是指將外源基因（一般為其他物種的基因）導入到目的生物體的基因組中，從而達到改造生物的目的的一種技術。

轉基因最初用於研究基因的功能，即把外源基因導入受體生物體基因組內（一般為模式生物，如阿拉伯芥或斑馬魚等），觀察生物體表現出的性狀，達到揭示基因功能的目的。
