語言能力，又稱為語言學能力、語言才能[1]、語言本能[2]，是指一個人所擁有的關於其母語的知識和技能。例如，了解字詞都是什麼含義，如何將字詞組成句子以及字詞如何發音等等。Noam Chomsky在他1965年的專著《Aspects of the Theory of Syntax》（句法理論之方方面面）之中首次採用了術語「linguistic competence（語言能力）」。語言能力是喬姆斯基語言性能／語言能力之間區別之中的兩個要素之一。
