始置於秦朝。漢景帝中六年（前144年），設山陽國。建元五年（前136年），為山陽郡。昌邑縣為其首縣。昌邑故城址在今菏澤市巨野縣境內。有梁丘鄉，《春秋傳》曰「宋、齊會於梁丘」。天漢四年（前97年），更山陽郡為昌邑國。南北朝時，劉宋廢除。
