辛克萊被認為是一名耙糞人,即揭露政府、商業中腐敗的記者。[3]他的第一部小說以連載的形式出現在1905年的社會主義新聞報刊《訴諸理性》(英語:Appeal to Reason (newspaper))。1904年,辛克萊以匿名的方式在芝加哥的肉類加工廠工作了7周,並將結果訴諸報社。這些故事後以小說的形式於1906年2月26日由雙日出版社出版。[4]
西奧多·羅斯福總統因辛克萊的社會主義立場而稱其為「狂想家」。[10]在給威廉·懷特的私信當中,羅斯福稱:「我對他深表輕蔑。他是個偽善的、失衡的、說謊的人。他說的四分之三的都是假話。剩下的只有些許的根據。」[11]在讀完《屠場》後,羅斯福對辛克萊的結論表示認同。羅斯福寫到「必須立即行動,打擊這些資本家的囂張與貪婪。」[12]他任命勞工委員查理斯·尼爾(英語:Charles P. Neill)和社會工作者詹姆斯·布朗森·雷諾茲(James Reynolds)到芝加哥去調查這些肉類加工廠。
在得知官方消息後,廠主提前清理的工作環境,但尼爾和雷諾茲仍然為環境的骯髒而感到噁心。他們向羅斯福進行了口頭報告,支持了辛克萊的描述,只是工人掉進染缸的問題除外。[13]尼爾在國會上作證,稱「有必要對此進行立法。」[14]當年,動物工業局(英語:Bureau of Animal Industry)發佈報告,否定了辛克萊的主張,稱其「故意誤導...歪曲事實...十分荒謬。」[15]
